We recycle. When it’s convenient.

Everybody talks about supporting sustainability. Until they want a convenient cup of coffee anyway.

Tim Hortons coffee cups are not recyclable. Machines like Keurig, Nespresso, and to a large extent Tassimo, are proliferating like mad, and use single serving cups that are not recyclable.

We want a convenient cup of coffee, but it’s far simpler to pop in a K-Cup and throw it away later than to take the time to brew it ourselves. Do as I say, not as I do.

I still make my espresso in a little pot that sits on the stove. Fill the filter with ground coffee, wait a few minutes, and I have a delicious cup of coffee and some compost. Takes all of five minutes, and it will always taste better too.

  1. I can’t speak for the specialty machine coffees but at least in my town, Tim Hortons cups can be put in the green bin to make delicious compost that’s provided free by waste management. Not the best solution but a little peace of mind.
