From a letter to the editor from Brian Timmins in today’s National Post comes these excellent definitions:

Patriotism: Patriotism is an expression of love for one’s country as it is, a truthful appraisal, maybe loud and garish but not demeaning to others, and most of all never founded on ignorance.

Nationalism: Nationalism turns true patriot love into a false premise that we are the best people and therefore have a God given right to tell others what to do.
