Making TiVo illegal.

According to JD Lasica at Darknet, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has generously provided language to the Senate Commerce Committee to insert into their digital television bill, including the following section:

(c) any usage rules adopted pursuant to paragraph (a) of this section (i) shall permit recording of specific programs, channels or time periods as selected by the user in increments of no less thanthirty minutes duration; (ii) shall not permit recording based on information concerning specific sound recordings, artists, genres or other user preferences, (iii) shall not permit the automateddisaggregation of the copyrighted material contained in any recording of a transmission program, and (iv) shall not permit the exporting or redistribution of recorded material from the device bydigital outputs or removable media.
The goal here seems to specifically target TiVo and anything like it, making such tools illegal.

And for some reason I won't be allowed to record an increment of less than 30 minutes, as in a single song perhaps. After all I, the customer, need to be protected from myself.

I can't help think that the industry is trying to make up for a failure years ago to outlaw all forms of home recording.

I especially loved the line:

In order to promote the availability of new, innovative and competitive devices...
As if the RIAA actually cares about innovation and competition, except to crush it.
