We are no longer shipping to Canada.

The other day I went to my local UPS Store because I was planning on shipping some things to Canada. John, the owner of the store, pointed to a sign mounted on the counter:

We are no longer shipping to Canada.
When I inquired as to why, he explained it was "because Customs had gone crazy up there". He explained that Canadian customs was charging taxes, duties, brokerage fees, and Customs fees. He was under the impression that NAFTA would have eliminated that, but it seemed not to be the case. He told me that he had fewer problems shipping to Uganda than Canada.

He said that the UPS hub one town over might ship to Canada, but none of the local stores would. I told him that I understood, because since moving to Canada I had been on the receiving end of those charges. I fact, I once paid $50 in taxes and fees to take posession of two $10 Beanie Babies.

It's disconcerting to know that UPS would rather ship to Uganda than to me.

A thought.... Perhaps it's UPS?

YES!

Try shipping with any other carrier - FedEx, DHL, even USPS. Only with UPS are the fees insanely high. I don't know how UPS can justify charging you a $35-$45 brokerage fee inspecting a $15 item. Every other carrier has much more reasonable fees.
