Some things change.

Kimball Farm in Westford sells the best ice cream in Massachusetts, and it used to be a great place, though incredibly busy. Last week we went there a couple of times for ice cream and for the coffee and danishes in the morning which I also like, though their prices have nearly doubled in the past couple of years.

Unfortunately Kimball's was also the site of my only bad experience in Massachusetts last week. I went to buy a frappe for my son, and a pint of ice cream. The girl serving us announce that the total was $13.10 - little more that the roughly $8 plus that I expected. She told me that she had rung up the frappe twice, and that the price of the pint was $4.80 according to the register. I pointed out that the sign, which I was standing under, said $4.75. No big deal really, but she then told me I was wrong.

I asked to speak to her manager, who came over and very rudely asked me what my problem was. She again corrected me about the price, telling me that nobody else had ever said anything about it. As I reached up to take the price tag down to show her she asked me not to do that. She then told me that since I said the sign indicated $4.75 she would obviously give me the lower price.

At no point did she allow that I might be correct, or apologize for their mistake. Obviously I was wrong, and she made it clear that it was a burden to serve me. That little event made me think twice about going back.

Point to remember: Sometimes your customers might actually be right. Arguing with them about it won't win you points. If they can read the sign, then don't tell them that they are wrong.
